History & Background of CNA National Warranty

CNA National Warranty has a rich history that dates back to 1982, with their establishment in Scottsdale, Arizona. They have the support of CNA Financial, a reputable insurance provider. This enables CNA National Warranty to provide comprehensive protection plans for both new and used cars across the United States and Canada. The company also offers a choice of reinsurance structures (CFC and NCFC), GAP coverage, tire-and-wheel protection, and ancillary products.

CNA National Warranty has received accreditation and an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) since 2010. With their strong presence and commitment to great customer service, CNA National Warranty has become a major player in the automotive warranty industry.

Reasons to Consider CNA National Warranty

CNA offers a variety of plans that include both extended and limited warranties. Their network of dealerships offers limited warranties on their certified used cars that cover specific systems and components for a certain period of time. When it comes to choosing a warranty provider for your vehicle, there are several benefits to selecting CNA National Warranty.

Since the company doesn’t provide a lot of information about its contracts, it's recommended that you refer to your sample contract once it's provided to know whether these benefits are included in the plan you select.

Here are a few benefits to consider:

  • Multiple deductible options: CNA offers a range of deductible options on their plans to meet your budget
  • Tire and wheel coverage: Select plans include coverage for tires and wheels, limiting out-of-pocket expenses for repairing damages from road hazards
  • Electric vehicle coverage: Unlike other auto warranty companies, CNA has a service contract dedicated to electric cars with four levels of coverage
  • Affordable payment plans: Customers are offered the flexibility to finance their payments through convenient monthly plans. This benefit is only available on the day of vehicle purchase
  • Less exclusions than other warranties: Unlike most warranties, CNA offers coverage for pre-existing conditions and normal wear and tear on some of its contracts, like the Z2 Service Contract
  • Wide range of coverage options: The company provides multiple warranty options, extended and limited, with two options for upgrades
  • Nationwide coverage: They provide nationwide coverage in the United States and Canada. However, some exclusions may apply in certain areas on some of the plans
  • Travel and lodging reimbursement: They reimburse you for your lodging and meal expenses up to a certain amount if you are stranded more than 100 miles from home because of a covered breakdown
  • Transferable contracts: Some of CNA’s contracts are transferable to new owners when you sell your car
  • Limp-along assistance: They offer a service where they pay to deliver a mobile charger for electric vehicles in case the propulsion battery gets drained while driving
  • Administers some of its products: CNA administers their limited warranty contracts: the Certified Warranty and the Lifetime Limited Powertrain Warranty, which can make purchasing and managing these contracts easier and less complicated

Drawbacks of CNA National Warranty

While the CNA National Warranty offers several benefits, it's important to be aware of its drawbacks as well. Here are some of the cons to consider:

  • No quote engine: CNA's website lacks a free quote engine, making it difficult to compare auto warranty providers and get an estimate on the price you'll pay for your vehicle
  • No sample contract: They don't provide sample contracts for any of their products. This means less transparency about the plans' inclusions, exclusions, prices, terms, and conditions
  • Not all contracts qualify for transfer or cancellation: Not all products sold by CNA are transferable, and certain contracts cannot be canceled. They advise you to contact your dealership for more information on your contract
  • Some contracts might not be renewable: Your vehicle service contract is not renewable unless it has a Future Contract Guarantee section in it
  • Not an administrator for all of its products: Their extended warranties are sold through their network of dealerships. This will mean that a third-party administrator will handle your contract, which might lead to longer and more complicated processes
  • Out-of-pocket expenses: CNA states that when their members file a claim, they might have to pay for teardown and diagnostic expenses and be reimbursed later, which might take a while and could be very costly
  • Limitations to extra benefits: Not all plans offered by CNA have all the extra benefits, such as towing and rental-car reimbursement

How CNA’s Services Work: Plans, Prices & More

When it comes to CNA National Warranty Services, there are various levels of coverage available to match individual needs. On some of their plans, they provide added perks such as roadside assistance, rental car reimbursement, travel and lodging reimbursement, Limp-along assistance, and wheel protection. Moreover, they have coverage options for different types of vehicles, ensuring that their services cater to a wide range of customers.

Please note that the plans and coverage offered by CNA have changed greatly over the past five years. We have included the most up-to-date information below, along with a brief overview of each plan.

Types of plans offered

Although their website lacks substantial information regarding the products they offer and the specific features they encompass, we have managed to gather valuable insights through our research. With CNAN, you have the freedom to choose from a few different warranty plans, with two upgrade options.

The plans are:

  • Z2 Service Contract: There are four levels of coverage for this plan, ranging from basic powertrain to exclusionary. Under this contract, there are special benefits, like not having exclusions for normal wear and tear or covered pre-existing conditions, and multiple deductible options. Also, there is the option for an extension before the end of the contract. They state that you can choose the length of coverage to meet your needs
  • EV Service Contract: This stands for Electric Vehicle Service Contract, which is a service contract specifically developed to cover multiple components in battery-powered electric vehicles

Under this plan, there are four levels of coverage:
  1. Standard Protect: This is stated-component coverage for important components
  2. Premier Protect: This plan has more comprehensive stated-component coverage
  3. Elite Protect: This is their comprehensive, exclusionary coverage
  4. Elite Protect with Battery: This plan is the highest level of protection and includes components covered by Elite Protect as well as the propulsion battery

  • Certified Warranty: CNAN offers and administers this limited warranty program through select dealerships, like CarMax, on used vehicles you purchase from them. In addition to this limited warranty, you have the option to purchase a service contract that wraps around it, adding more years and types of coverage to the warranty. Ask your dealer for the specifics of this warranty
  • Lifetime Limited Powertrain Warranty and Wrap: CNA also offers and administers another limited warranty that is free and is included on used vehicles bought through select dealerships. With this warranty, you can have coverage for necessary parts like the powertrain components for as long as you own the vehicle

Under this lifetime warranty, you can purchase the additional coverage of Lifetime Wrap to complement the warranty and receive a complete wrap warranty. This means you will get extra coverage for your vehicle’s engine, transmission, drivetrain components, and other benefits. There is also a coverage option with no term or mileage restrictions.

The upgrade options are:

  • Guaranteed Asset Protection (GAP) Waiver: With CNA National, you have the option to purchase an extra level of protection for your vehicle. This protection is designed to reduce or eliminate the amount remaining on your auto loan if your vehicle has been determined to be a total loss due to theft or an accident. This can help you limit the financial obligation by waiving some or all of what you still owe. The waiver must be bought with the vehicle, which can be either used or new. It is important to note that terms, conditions, limits of liability exclusions, and state-specific provisions may change your coverage or benefits. It is also important to read the contract for the waiver carefully
  • Ancillary Suite of Products: CNA offers an additional upgrade to its contracts, specializing in keeping your vehicle looking good, both inside and out. This plan offers coverage for the following components:
  1. Tire and wheel: They offer coverage to replace or repair tires and wheels damaged by a road hazard, such as a pothole, nail, or any object not normally found on the road. They also have optional coverage for wheels that sustain significant cosmetic damage, such as a scrape or dent. This protection includes reimbursement for towing, flat-tire change assistance, and alternate transportation
  2. Paintless Dent Repair (PDR): CNA offers coverage for dents and dings on your vehicle that can be restored back to their original form after damage
  3. Interior and exterior protection: They offer protection to the exterior of your vehicle against environmental contaminants, including tree sap, insects, and hard-water spots. Interior protection covers the fabric against stains from food, drinks, pets, gum, makeup, crayons, lotions, etc., and protects leather and vinyl from fading, discoloring, and cracking
  4. Rust inhibitor and undercoating protection: This protective coating is applied to both the sheet-metal surfaces and underbody, serving as a barrier against rust damage while also preventing cracking, chipping, and peeling of the metal surfaces
  5. Theft-deterrent: They offer a unique identifier that is applied to your vehicle so that it’s traceable and less attractive to thieves once they see it on your vehicle
  6. Windshield protection: They offer protection on the windshield of your vehicle against any damage that might impede your ability to see on the road or that might get worse over time and increase the cost of repairs down the line

Keep in mind that not all of these products are available in all states. We recommend checking if they are available in your state and reading your contract for coverage details, restrictions, and exclusions before purchase. Also, check with your dealership to see if they are part of CNA’s dealer network.

Exclusions

Exclusions from the CNA National Warranty coverage depend on the contract you choose and where you live. Exclusions might include pre-existing conditions, wear and tear, certain aftermarket modifications or accessories, limitations on specific vehicle hardware, total loss or cosmetic damage, and details about limits of liability. This all depends on the level of coverage you purchase.

Coverage under the CNA National Warranty protects against mechanical breakdowns, ensuring necessary repairs and parts replacement. However, it's important to be aware of any applicable limitations and exclusions.

Costs associated with CNA

Several factors can influence the cost of CNA’s plans and warranties. First, the vehicle's age, mileage, and condition play a significant role. Older vehicles with higher mileage and wear and tear may require more extensive coverage, resulting in higher costs. The coverage level, desired deductible, and upgrade you choose could also impact the price. Opting for a comprehensive plan with lower deductibles will likely increase the cost. As well as asking to finance the total cost in monthly installments, as it will include paying interest.

Even though they do not offer any information on prices, our research suggests that the total cost might range from $1500 to $3000. One customer with a 2012 Acura MDX paid $2,300 for a four-year, or 48,000-mile, contract.

We suggest that you compare quotes from multiple providers before deciding which warranty is best for you. Understanding the factors we mentioned can help you make an informed decision when considering the cost of a CNA National Warranty. Should You Consider CNA?

Bearing in mind the previously mentioned aspects of the CNA company, their services might be more suitable for some than others. You might want to consider their services if you:

  • Are on a budget: While it’s impossible to estimate the exact cost of a CNA National warranty without getting a quote, we have found that their prices are often lower than those of other providers. They also allow you to break up the total cost of your warranty into installments
  • Are not covered by your car manufacturer’s warranty: If you have an older vehicle, the original factory warranty may no longer be in effect. A CNA National Warranty can provide you with additional coverage
  • Want the option to transfer your contract: Some CNA National Warranty plans are transferable, which can be advantageous if you plan to sell your vehicle, as this feature increases the resale value of your vehicle
  • Want to customize your coverage: CNA National allows you to customize your coverage with additional benefits such as rental reimbursement, roadside assistance, and/or trip interruption. This gives you more control over the payment duration, coverage type, and extra benefits
  • Are a frequent driver: This is especially useful for those who tend to accumulate miles. With the option of unlimited mileage, you can enjoy the utmost security for however long you need it
  • Want extra protection: CNA National Warranty provides a variety of packages that protect your vehicle's paint, interior, exterior, and mechanical components
  • Have an electric vehicle: With CNA National Warranty’s electric vehicle coverage plan, you can have peace of mind knowing your EV is protected
  • Want to buy a used vehicle: They provide limited warranties that cover the repair and replacement of mechanical components that are included with vehicles purchased through their dealership network

CNA National Warranty Reviews: Real Users

On the BBB website, CNA has received a 3.71 out of 5 rating, with some customers expressing satisfaction and others dissatisfied with their services. Despite the mixed feedback, CNA holds an A+ rating with accreditation from the BBB.

Positive experiences with CNA National Warranty

Customers who have chosen CNA National Warranty have found the process of filing claims and receiving reimbursement to be easy and hassle-free. The company's professional and helpful customer service has also received much praise. Customers have had positive experiences with the repair process at authorized facilities, finding it to be hassle-free. One customer gave it a five-star rating and stated that they purchased a new truck with a complete wrap warranty from CNA. After three years, they experienced a transmission problem. When they contacted CNA, they said they were easy to work with, covered all the repairs, offered great service, and replaced the parts through their own network.

Negative experiences with CNA National Warranty

There have also been instances where customers were dissatisfied with the customer service response or lack of communication regarding their claims. Some customers reported difficulties reaching the claims department or receiving timely updates on the status of their claims. Additionally, disappointments arose from the exclusions and limitations of the repair facility's options and the quality of service provided. Negative experiences were also reported with the cancellation or refund process.

One customer reported a specific incident in which their motor malfunctioned three months after purchase. When they took their car to the repair facility, they encountered difficulties with the claim process. The repair facility tried to deny the claim by suggesting that a foreign object was sucked into the engine or that the customer had voided the warranty by painting the timing belt red. Despite making numerous calls to the claims department, the customer's repair expenses were not covered, leading to frustration and dissatisfaction.

To make a well-informed decision when contemplating a policy from CNA National, it is recommended to read diverse reviews on the BBB website and explore different experiences. This will provide a comprehensive understanding of the policy's terms, including coverage, exclusions, and the claims process. By doing so, potential customers can avoid future frustrations and ensure peace of mind, knowing that they are adequately covered
