Ox Car Care at a Glance

Ox Car Care is an auto warranty company that aims to protect individuals and families from the unnecessarily high prices of car servicing and repair. They state that even used cars or trucks have gotten more costly to repair and maintain, and some consumers may be favoring cars that are cheaper and easier to take care of because of this.

They pride themselves on protecting their customers from being ripped off on repairs. They say they have covered over a million vehicles, achieving 96% customer satisfaction and overwhelmingly positive customer reviews, although some sources online show more mixed results. They have received an A+ rating and accreditation from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) since 2018.

Ox Car Care is keen to provide the best customer experience for their clients, as they offer a wide range of car services with adjustable payment plans. Their plans are also customizable to fit your unique needs and requirements. Some of their headline features include the option to choose your own certified mechanic, courtesy towing, 24/7 roadside assistance, flexible payment terms, and rental car reimbursement, all of which are subject to contract terms and conditions.

Why You Might Choose Ox

Ox offers vehicle owners various features and benefits that come with subscribing to one of their versatile plans. They offer sample policies for you to look over before deciding. The following are some of the features and benefits of their plans:

Coverage for major parts

The basic coverage plan covers the main major parts, including the engine, drive axle, seals and gaskets, and transmission, which may be some of the most expensive to repair. They also offer limited tire repair or replacement due to a road hazard. Higher-tier plans include coverage for other parts like brakes, A/C, suspension, and high-tech parts like anti-lock brakes.

Extra Packages

All plans can have optional packages added for modified vehicles as well as ride share use of your car.

Adjustable payment plans

Ox Car Care offers three plan tiers that are customizable to the customer's specific vehicle needs and tailored to the customer’s coverage requirements and budget.

24/7 roadside assistance

An Ox warranty offers 24/7 roadside assistance for some emergency services and towing to repair shops. They want their customers to not have to worry about their cars breaking down all of a sudden and not finding the assistance they need. There are some limitations to the number of yearly calls and the degree of services provided, as laid out in the contracts.

You get to pick your repair shop

Customers get to choose where to repair their vehicle, although there are restrictions. It must be at a repair shop that is certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or at your dealership. Generally, though, they do not restrict you to specific repair shops, as other auto warranty companies might.

Provision of rental and towing vehicles

Most plans allow for rental car reimbursement while a customer's vehicle is being repaired. Towing may also be provided in the event of a breakdown as part of their roadside assistance service. Some limitations and exclusions apply, as laid out in the contracts.

Money-saving plans

Ox Car Care prides itself on saving you thousands of dollars on expensive repair costs in the long run. While not all plans may fit your budget or cover all your repair requirements, they do offer some flexibility and can work to fit your needs. They claim that they make deductibles small so that repairs cost you less compared to other service providers on the market. As an informed consumer, make sure that all the discussed services and cost breakdowns are outlined in your contract before signing.

Ox Car Care Plans & Prices

Although they don't advertise their prices online, you can get a free quote through their website. They do advertise three different plans for you to choose from: Diamond, Platinum, and Gold. There are also Superior and Ultimate plans, although they do not provide much information on them online.

All plans come with the option of adding two extra packages to them, although only after paying a surcharge. The first is the Ride Share option, which allows you to drive your car for Uber, Lyft, or other similar services. Secondly, the Modification option will cover you for alterations to vehicle height, engine performance, fuel efficiency, emissions controls, or those that affect the vehicle's intake or exhaust.

The following is a brief description of each plan:

The Diamond Plan

This is the most premium coverage plan they offer. It covers the largest list of parts on top of major components, including base and high-tech electrical and anti-lock brakes, among others. The term period tends to be the longest of the three and could cover unlimited mileage.

This may be the perfect plan for new vehicles or more demanding used vehicles. Ox supplies a sample contract for this plan online that we recommend reading through. It is quote-based, and you need to contact the Ox sales team to get a price. Read our in-depth blog post on the Diamond plan for more information.

The Platinum Plan

This comprehensive policy offers coverage for most mechanical and electrical parts, excluding a few "high-tech" parts. There are some limits on mileage and certain service coverages, which you can read about more in the plan's sample contract. This plan is also quote-based, so you will need to contact the Ox sales team to inquire about your quote. Get comprehensive information on this plan in our blog post about the Platinum plan.

The Gold Plan

This is Ox Car Care’s powertrain plus plan. They promote their lowest-level plan, with the shortest term period and the lowest deductibles and mileage limits. It is meant to be an all-inclusive, full-coverage program that covers major repairs but not some high-tech parts. This plan is customized to provide customers with peace of mind for common repairs. You can find more information on this plan in their sample contract. As with the other plans, this is a quote-based plan, and you need to contact the Ox sales team to find out more. Read more about it in our Gold plan post.

Superior & Ultimate Plans

The Superior Plan is a mid-level plan that Ox Car Care offers that covers a variety of repairs, including engine, transmission, electrical, and more. The deductible for the Superior Plan is $100. Ox also offers a top-tier plan called the Ultimate Plan. It covers even more repairs than the Superior Plan, including some that extended warranties typically do not cover. The deductible for the Ultimate Plan is $250.

Both of these plans differ from the others in that you may only file 40 days after purchase instead of 30. These plans are provided by a third-party administrator, Direct Protection Warranty Services, and are not as well covered as the above three on the Ox Car Care website, so we suggest asking the salesperson for more information.

Who Is the Ox Auto Warranty For?

Ox Car Care aims to offer plans for every type of driver, regardless of their vehicle type. The following are some of the client groups that Ox Car Care may suit:

Brand-new vehicle owners

Ox Car Care can help you keep your new car in the best condition possible. Their plans for new cars typically have longer coverage periods than plans for used vehicles and cover more high-tech parts than lower-tier plans. You would be covered for a longer period of time, even if you traded in your car before the end of the warranty period.

Owners of older vehicles

When vehicles get older, they are more likely to break down. Ox offers variety within its plans, including those specifically designed for older cars. These plans typically have lower deductibles and longer coverage periods than plans for newer cars. They also offer limited roadside assistance and some rental car reimbursements.

Owners with expired manufacturer’s warranty

They offer plans that work for customers with lapsed protection to provide you with peace of mind. They are quote-based, so your quote for a vehicle with an expired warranty may be higher, but you can customize coverage to your specific needs and budget with their sales team.

Heavy road users

If your job requires you to be on the move all the time, or if you’re simply leading a lifestyle that requires you to be regularly on the road, an Ox warranty provides 24/7 roadside assistance for your convenience. There are some limitations on services rendered and the number of yearly calls, so you should speak to a representative to find out if it works for you.

Families

If you’re an individual with a family, maintaining your car’s health while keeping it on the road need not be a nuisance. An Ox warranty offers a variety of customized plans specifically designed for families. These plans typically have lower deductibles and longer coverage periods than plans for single drivers.

Those plans may be convenient because of roadside assistance and rental car reimbursement. Still, there will be limitations that you won't find out about unless you read the contract and ask your representative specific questions.

Truck & commercial vehicle owners

Repairs for commercial vehicles such as trucks, buses, or trailers can be very expensive. Having a coverage plan customized to cover those expenses can significantly reduce the burden of those expenses. Ox's car warranty offers coverage plans for commercial car owners to cut down on repair costs.

However, it's important to be specific with the sales representative about your requirements and budget so that you don't end up paying more in the long run or receiving deficient coverage.

Mixed Reviews for Ox Warranty: Should You Be Skeptical?

While they might want to highlight the positive reviews on their site, Ox Car Care has received some negative attention within its lifespan. While they have an A+ rating at BBB, their customer review rating there is 2.72/5. Additionally, they have a 3.6/5 rating at Reviews.io but a 1.5/5 rating at Trustpilot, although that is out of a much smaller sample of reviews. We tend to take reviews online with a grain of salt because consumers might be more motivated by the negative than by the positive events they face. However, we have seen some trends that we think are important to note.

Common points from Ox Car Care reviewers

Many people complain about the claims process being very slow, having waited weeks or even months for their claims to be processed. Others were unhappy with customer service, reporting that they had been hung up on, transferred multiple times, and did not contact a supervisor when requested. Some say they email support but receive no answer. On the other hand, many Ox Car Care reviews report having success with customer service requests, like payment extensions or claim approval, and feel that it was done promptly once they followed the proper procedures.

Some customers who left an Ox Car Care review say that their claims were denied outright, even though they were led to believe the repairs in question should be covered. Some customers report having to complain in an open forum, like the BBB, before Ox would honor their claim. Even then, they might still be denied for such reasons as the customer reaching a limit on the number of such claims per term or because the repair costs were less than the deductible. However, we found a good number of reviews touting their savings with the company taking care of high-value repair items, like the car transmission or engine.

Some customers have even declared that Ox is an outright scam that does not honor its promises. They feel that the company misrepresented the terms of the extended warranty plan to get you to sign and make it hard to get reimbursements for parts, services, and cancellations. Customers have reported being told that certain repairs were covered when they were not, or that the deductible and other fees were lower than they actually were. We found that Ox personnel tend to respond to complaints in online forums to clarify these issues and often reimburse customers for costs they dispute. Some reviewers seem to be previously skeptical or unhappy customers who feel like their concerns were addressed with this company, so we think that's a good sign.

Finally, a savvy consumer will note that some of the positive reviews online may not be real because they are vague and read like marketing slogans. However, we give the Ox Car Care website credit for only highlighting genuine reviews.

What we take away from reviews

If there is one trend we can see from negative reviews online, it's that of misinformation. Customers might feel like they were sold policies that covered less than promised or that they had to go through a lot of trouble to get their claims addressed. It's important to note that Ox Car Care handles claims and support internally and does not outsource them, so an understaffed team may contribute to this issue. Still, we think that support should be helpful and available for your concerns.

We also understand that some customers may not be aware of some term stipulations, such as the fact that you may only file 30 days from the date of purchase and 1,000 additional miles from the starting odometer. They may also not be providing proper information or proof (receipts). There may also be some exclusions buried in the contract to explain a claim being denied, such as the damage being a result of wear and tear or abuse.

Keep in mind that salespeople might sell you on services offered at a higher price before signing you up for a budget plan without properly explaining the differences in detail. As a rule, we suggest you read the contract well and ask a lot of questions to ensure proper coverage. And make sure to do your comparison research to ensure the best bang for your buck.

Final Words: Our Ox Car Care Review

Ox Car Care is an auto warranty service provider that seems keen on helping individuals and families save on the expensive cost of automobile repairs. It offers a wide range of features and benefits, including choosing your own repair shop, covering major parts, having 24/7 roadside assistance, and providing customizable plans.

Ox Car Care can provide its customers with affordable plans that can be tailored to their unique car needs and requirements, but they also offer higher-cost plans that cover more parts and services.
