AutoAssure: Buyer Beware

According to the Endurance website, Endurance acquired AutoAssure Extended Repair Coverage in 2016 as part of its rapid growth. Endurance is a direct extended warranty provider, meaning that it directly handles its service contracts from the initial sale to the claims process without the need for a middleman. Currently, the AutoAssure website redirects users to the Endurance website.

However, in 2018, the Minnesota Attorney General's Office filed a lawsuit against AutoAssure, alleging that the company had violated the state's Consumer Fraud Act. According to the Minnesota Attorney General's Office website, the lawsuit against AutoAssure alleged that the company had engaged in deceptive and misleading sales practices in its marketing and sale of extended warranties to Minnesota consumers. Specifically, the lawsuit alleged that AutoAssure:

  • Misrepresented the scope of coverage of its extended warranties
  • Failed to disclose important exclusions and limitations in its extended warranties
  • Pressured consumers into purchasing extended warranties by falsely claiming that their car warranties were about to expire
  • Made false promises about the quality of its extended warranties

The lawsuit also alleged that AutoAssure's deceptive and misleading sales practices had caused Minnesota consumers to suffer financial losses. According to the Minnesota Attorney General's Office website, the lawsuit against AutoAssure was settled in December 2019. As part of the settlement, AutoAssure agreed to pay $400,000 in restitution to Minnesota consumers who had purchased extended warranties from the company, and it was banned from marketing in Minnesota for four years. The settlement also required AutoAssure to overhaul its sales practices if it ever does business in the state again after the ban expires.

It’s unclear whether AutoAssure still continues to offer car warranties to consumers, with some websites claiming that they do; however, currently the AutoAssure website redirects users to the Endurance website. Consumers should be careful before purchasing a car warranty from AutoAssure. It might be worthwhile to check out different extended auto warranty providers or stick with directly getting an auto warranty from Endurance or another well-known provider. AM Best has given Endurance's insurance provider an A rating, which is a high ranking that denotes stability and financial strength. This means that Endurance is highly likely to be able to pay its claims in the event of a breakdown.

Here are some things to keep in mind if you are considering purchasing a car warranty from AutoAssure: Read the fine print, get multiple quotes from different providers, and beware of high-pressure sales tactics. AutoAssure has been accused of using high-pressure sales tactics to pressure consumers into purchasing car warranties. If you feel pressured, walk away. Another good indication is reading previous customer reviews; The Better Business Bureau is a reliable source. Currently, AutoAssure has a C+ rating and is not BBB accredited.

  • It falsely associated itself with the manufacturers because they noted "Vehicle Services Department" as the sender

The state attorney's accusations are still pending, but a similar case against the previous AutoAssure general manager resulted in a $270,000 fine and a ban from conducting business in Minnesota.
