Spider-Man: Brand New Day Becomes Highest-Grossing US Film Ever
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has broken the all-time domestic box office record. Sony confirmed this week that the Tom Holland-led sequel has reached a cumulative North American total of $936.77 million, edging past Star Wars: The Force Awakens' decade-old record of $936.66 million to claim the top spot in domestic box office history.
The film hit the milestone after just 47 days in theaters, a stretch that saw it lead the domestic box office for six consecutive weekends after opening July 31. That's a notably faster climb than Force Awakens, which needed 20 days just to break the previous all-time record & didn't finish its run until it reached $936.6 million over a much longer theatrical window.
Holland's own summer has been just as historic. Thanks to Brand New Day & his other 2026 release, Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, the 30-year-old actor recently became the highest-grossing lead actor in box office history, with his films' worldwide grosses now totaling roughly $15.5 billion. That figure edges out previous record holders Zoe Saldaña ($15.46 billion) & Scarlett Johansson ($15.4 billion), and it's worth noting the milestone is measured globally & across Holland's full filmography, not tied to this single film's domestic haul. Holland reached the mark in just 14 years, making him the youngest actor to ever hold the record.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton & starring Holland alongside Zendaya, Sadie Sink & Jon Bernthal, Brand New Day has been rewriting the record books practically since its release. It set the record for the biggest domestic opening weekend ever with $360 million, notched the highest-grossing first week in domestic history & became the second-fastest film, behind only Avengers: Endgame, to cross $1 billion worldwide.
Worldwide, the movie has now grossed more than $2.4 billion, making it the third-highest-grossing film of all time globally, trailing only Avengers: Endgame's $2.8 billion & Avatar's $2.9 billion. It's also become the highest-grossing solo superhero movie ever made & the biggest release in Sony's history.
There's an interesting wrinkle in how the film got there. Roughly 62% of Brand New Day's total box office haul has come from international markets, a lower share than Endgame (69.3%) or Avatar (73.1%), meaning domestic audiences did comparatively more of the heavy lifting this time around.
Force Awakens had held the all-time domestic crown since December 2015, a run of more than ten years that made it one of the longer-standing records in modern box office history. Losing that title to Brand New Day underscores just how rare this kind of sustained, multi-week dominance has become in an era when most blockbusters front-load their grosses into an opening weekend and fade quickly after.
Even with the record secured, Brand New Day's reign at the top of the weekly box office has already ended; the film slipped to second place this past weekend, grossing $8.4 million as it was outpaced by the debut of Practical Magic 2, starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. Still, the all-time domestic mark is now Spidey's to lose, and with a total still climbing, there's little standing in the way of Sony toasting one of the biggest box office runs in recent memory.
