Annie 50th Anniversary Broadway Revival Set for 2027
A brand-new Broadway revival of Annie will open in fall 2027, timed to mark 50 years since the show's original 1977 premiere, with Tony winner Sam Pinkleton set to direct.
The announcement, made this week, confirms months of fan speculation that kicked off after Pinkleton named Annie his favorite musical on Instagram back in 2025. He's since become one of Broadway's hottest directorial names, having won the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play for Oh, Mary! and currently helming the acclaimed revival of The Rocky Horror Show.
"If you ask any of my closest friends what I love more than anything on the planet, everyone will have the same answer: Annie," Pinkleton said in a statement. "Annie is everything I love about New York City: gutsy, fearless, and funny as hell." He added that he and his collaborators will approach the production "with open hearts and total adoration for this legendary show that has made generations fall in love with musicals."
The new staging will be produced by Michael Alden & Hal Luftig, along with Cathy Dantchik & Kevin Connor, under the Halcyon Theatricals banner. Casting, venue, and exact performance dates have not yet been revealed, though producers say more details will follow as the fall 2027 opening approaches.
Annie first hit Broadway on April 21, 1977, with a book by Thomas Meehan, music by Charles Strouse, and lyrics by Martin Charnin. Adapted from Harold Gray's Depression-era comic strip Little Orphan Annie, the musical follows a scrappy orphan who's taken in by billionaire Oliver Warbucks. It introduced two of musical theater's most enduring songs, "Tomorrow" and "It's the Hard-Knock Life." The original production swept seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Book of a Musical, and turned then-13-year-old Andrea McArdle into a star.
This upcoming revival will mark the show's fourth trip to Broadway, following prior stagings in 1997 (which featured Sutton Foster) and 2012 (with Jane Lynch as Miss Hannigan). Annie has also had an especially rich life on screen, with film versions released in 1982, 1999, and 2014, plus a live NBC television production in 2021.
The families of the show's original creative team offered their own blessing for the new production. "Annie is performed somewhere in the world virtually every moment of every day, from elementary-school auditoriums to regional theatres and major international stages. But Broadway will always be home," the Meehan family said in a statement, per Playbill.
The production is still more than a year out, and no casting news has been shared. But given Pinkleton's track record of turning cult favorites into Broadway sensations, expectations for this Annie are already sky-high.
