Viola Davis Stars In 'Ascent' Series Ordered By Paramount+
Viola Davis is heading back to series television, and this time she's playing someone whose entire job is cleaning up other people's messes.
Paramount+ has officially greenlit Ascent, a character-driven thriller starring the EGOT winner as Catriona Vail, an elite corporate fixer who spends her days protecting billion-dollar clients from scandal, disaster, and public fallout. The catch: when her estranged daughter ends up in danger, Vail has to turn those same ruthless instincts toward the one problem she can't smooth over with a press release, according to Deadline.
The series comes from John Logan, the Tony winner and three-time Oscar nominee behind Skyfall, Gladiator, and Penny Dreadful, who created Ascent and will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Michael Aguilar, known for Penny Dreadful: City of Angels and The Departed, also executive produces. Davis and her husband, Julius Tennon, round out the producing team through their company JuVee Productions.
In a statement, Davis didn't hide her enthusiasm for the project. "I am overwhelmingly excited about this journey with the great John Logan," she said. "We won the lottery with this one! Work in which both story and character are bold, awe-inspiring, and deeply unique is why I became an artist."
Jane Wiseman, head of originals for Paramount+, echoed that energy, calling Catriona Vail "an incredibly complex character" and praising Davis as "exactly the generational talent to bring her to life." Matt Thunell, president of Paramount Television Studios, added that the show will shoot on the Paramount Lot in Los Angeles, with production slated to begin in 2027, per Paramount's official announcement.
Ascent is the latest in a string of straight-to-series orders Paramount+ has handed out under Wiseman in just the past few months, joining Laird with Kenneth Branagh, 9/12 with Jeremy Strong, Discretion with Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning, Fear Not with Anne Hathaway, a Clueless sequel, and even an animated Garfield series. That's a lot of big swings landing in a short window, and it comes right as the newly merged Paramount is trying to prove its streaming arm can compete without the pilot process that used to weed out weaker concepts before they got a full season order.
Skipping that step can pay off when the talent is this strong, but it also means the pressure to deliver falls entirely on execution rather than an early test run. For a show built around a character whose whole identity is managing crises before they spiral, it would be a little ironic if the series itself became one more project greenlit on momentum rather than a fully proven concept.
Davis previously won an Emmy for her work on ABC's How to Get Away with Murder, which ran from 2014 to 2020, and her return to series television has been something fans have wondered about for years. Pairing her with Logan, who has built a career on morally tangled protagonists, feels like a deliberate move by Paramount+ to plant a flag in the prestige thriller space currently dominated by rivals like Apple TV+ and Netflix.
No cast beyond Davis has been announced yet, and a premiere date has not been set. Given the 2027 production start, viewers likely won't see Ascent until sometime that year at the earliest.
