Stress is usually associated with anxiety, irritability, exhaustion, or feeling overwhelmed. Yet the body's response to stress is physical from the start. Heart rate increases, blood pressure rises, and hormones help prepare the body to respond to whatever it perceives as a threat. When this happens repeatedly over long periods, research suggests the effects may extend well beyond mental health.

Recent medical attention has focused on chronic stress as a possible contributor to high blood pressure and, indirectly, kidney problems. The National Kidney Foundation notes that chronic stress can increase blood pressure, make diabetes harder to manage, and increase inflammation that may damage blood vessels, including those in the kidneys. The connection is part of a larger body of research examining how prolonged stress may affect cardiovascular, metabolic, and immune health, particularly when the body has too little time to recover between stressful experiences.

What Chronic Stress Does to the Body

The stress response is not inherently harmful. When the brain detects a threat or demanding situation, the body releases hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. Heart rate and breathing speed up, blood pressure temporarily rises, and more energy becomes available. Once the situation passes, these responses would normally settle.

Chronic stress can keep activating these systems over days, weeks, or longer. Researchers sometimes measure the resulting physiological strain through "allostatic load," which looks at changes across several systems rather than relying on a single measure such as cortisol.

A 2026 study of 205,504 UK Biobank participants found that cardiovascular disease risk increased alongside allostatic load. Participants with an allostatic load score of six or higher had more than twice the cardiovascular disease risk of those with a score of zero. Researchers also found that inflammation appeared to explain part of the association. The findings do not prove that chronic psychological stress causes heart disease, but they show how accumulated physiological strain can be associated with long-term health.

The American Heart Association explains that adrenaline released during stress temporarily raises heart rate and blood pressure. Chronic stress may contribute to high blood pressure, although the precise relationship is still being studied.

How Stress May Affect Long-Term Health

High blood pressure also helps explain the recent interest in stress and kidney health. The kidneys contain small blood vessels that filter waste and excess fluid from the blood, and hypertension can damage those vessels over time. Chronic stress is not considered a direct cause of kidney disease, but repeated blood pressure increases and stress-related behaviors may add to established risk factors.

Researchers are also studying inflammation as one possible link between prolonged stress and chronic disease. Persistent stress can affect immune signaling, while inflammation is involved in cardiovascular disease and several metabolic conditions. Changes in glucose regulation, appetite, sleep, and metabolism may provide other pathways through which stress influences health over time.

Some effects can appear much sooner. Headaches, muscle tension, stomach problems, fatigue, sleep disruption, and a racing heart can accompany stressful periods. The American Psychological Association describes stress as both a physiological and psychological response that can affect nearly every system of the body.

Stress can also change behavior. Poor sleep may leave someone with less energy to exercise, while prolonged pressure can affect eating habits, alcohol consumption, smoking, or social interaction. The physical effects of chronic stress may therefore come from several overlapping biological and behavioral pathways rather than one simple cause.

Modern Life Can Make Recovery Harder

Stress itself is nothing new, but some modern stressors can be particularly difficult because they rarely have a clear endpoint. Work can follow people home through phones and email, financial worries remain after the workday ends, and news and social media provide a continuous stream of information competing for attention.

The American Psychological Association's 2025 Stress in America survey illustrates some of these pressures. Among 3,199 U.S. adults, 76% considered the country's future a significant source of stress, 69% cited inaccurate or misleading information, 62% cited societal division, and 57% pointed to the rise of artificial intelligence. More than half said they felt isolated from others at least some of the time.

None of this proves that people today experience more stress than previous generations. It does show how many current stressors can remain present for long periods. Financial pressure, caregiving, job insecurity, family problems, and uncertainty cannot always be resolved quickly, which can make it harder to find periods of rest and recovery.

What Helps When Stress Cannot Be Avoided?

Removing the source of stress is often unrealistic. A person cannot necessarily leave a demanding job, eliminate financial problems, stop caring for a family member, or remove uncertainty from their life. Managing chronic stress may therefore be less about creating a stress-free life and more about giving the body regular opportunities to recover.

Exercise, adequate sleep, controlled breathing, meditation, yoga, and enjoyable activities are among the approaches recommended by the American Heart Association. The organization also points to healthy eating and limiting alcohol and smoking, since stress can influence behaviors that affect cardiovascular health.

Social connection may matter too. The APA's latest survey found considerable overlap between loneliness, stress, and poorer reported health, although those findings do not establish cause and effect. Setting boundaries around work, notifications, or constant news exposure can also create periods with fewer demands on your attention.

A stress-free life is neither realistic nor necessarily desirable. The body's stress response helps people react to danger and meet everyday demands. The concern is what happens when those demands become persistent and periods of recovery become increasingly rare.
Chronic stress does not mean chronic disease is inevitable. But treating stress as something that exists only in the mind overlooks how much of the body participates in the response.
