Cutting Sugar Before Age 2 Is Linked to 46% Lower Alzheimer's Risk

In 1953, the day Britain's sugar rationing ended, toddlers' sugar intake nearly doubled overnight. Decades later, scientists found out what that meant for their brains: kids who grew up with little to no sugar in their first 2 years had a 46% lower risk of Alzheimer's and a 27% lower risk of dementia overall, according to a new study in npj Aging.

How Sugar Rationing Became an Accidental Experiment
There was no way researchers could run this experiment in a lab, so they found one already sitting in history. Britain's sugar rationing, a wartime measure that stretched into the early 1950s, gave adults a daily allowance, but children under 2 got no separate sugar ration at all.
When rationing ended in September 1953, sugar consumption for the under-2 group nearly doubled almost overnight. That gave researchers something nutrition studies rarely get: a large group whose early sugar exposure was dictated by government policy rather than by their parents' income, education, or health-consciousness, the usual factors that make diet research hard to trust. It let them compare long-term health outcomes across more than 60,000 UK Biobank participants who did or didn't grow up under rationing.
Alzheimer's, Dementia, & Mental Health Risk
Beyond Alzheimer's and dementia, the same protective pattern held for mental health. Adults exposed to early rationing were 20% less likely to have anxiety and 11% less likely to have depression, with no meaningful link to Parkinson's disease.
A few more details make this even more interesting. Restriction only during pregnancy, without continuing after birth, showed a much weaker effect, suggesting it's really the birth-to-age-2 window doing the heavy lifting, not just what mom ate while pregnant. And the longer that postnatal restriction lasted past six months, the stronger the protection against anxiety and depression became. The benefits were also more consistent in women than in men.
Younger Brain Age & Larger Memory Regions
Those who experienced rationing in their first two years of life had brain scans that appeared, on average, .39 years younger than their actual age. That number sounds small on its own, but what’s significant is that it showed up consistently across tens of thousands of scans, and it's one of several biomarkers researchers associate with lower dementia risk.
These same brains showed larger hippocampal and thalamic volume, regions directly linked to memory. The hippocampus is the brain's memory-formation center, it's what converts a new experience into something you can recall later, and it's also one of the very first regions to shrink in Alzheimer's disease, often years before someone notices any symptoms. That's part of why hippocampal shrinkage has become a standard early warning sign doctors look for. So when this group's scans showed larger hippocampal volume decades later, it's not just "a bigger brain region," it's a structure that typically loses ground with age and disease, showing up better preserved than expected.
The thalamus plays a different role day to day. It acts as a relay station, routing sensory and motor signals to the rest of the brain, but a specific part of it, the anterior thalamus, is wired directly into the same memory circuit as the hippocampus. Thalamic volume loss shows up in several forms of dementia as well, which is why researchers treat it as a second, related marker rather than a random extra measurement.
Put together, that's three separate pieces of physical evidence, the brain age gap, hippocampal volume, and thalamic volume, all pointing in the same direction as the disease-risk percentages. That's a meaningfully stronger case than if the study only had self-reported diagnoses to go on, since it means researchers can actually see a structural difference in the brain tissue itself, not just a statistical pattern in who got diagnosed with what.
Does This Mean Sugar Causes Alzheimer's?
It's worth being clear about what this study can and can't prove. This is an association, not causation, even though using real rationing history instead of self-reported diets makes it stronger evidence than a typical nutrition study. Rationing also cut back on meat, fat, and other goods, not just sugar, so researchers can't fully isolate sugar as the one responsible factor.
Exposure was also estimated by birth year and rationing period rather than tracked individually. And as the researchers themselves cautioned, 'no single study can change official guidelines overnight.' None of this means sugar directly causes Alzheimer's, only that early exposure and later risk appear to be linked.
Why This Matters Even If You're Not Raising a Toddler

You might be reading this thinking none of it matters for you, since you can't go back and change what you ate as a toddler. But this research matters for two reasons. The first is obvious: if you're raising a child under 2, this adds a brain-health rationale to guidance the AAP and WHO already give, usually framed around obesity, not long-term cognitive risk. The second is that this adds to a growing body of research suggesting dementia risk is shaped across an entire lifespan, not just your 50s and 60s, which pushes the "when does prevention start" question back further than most people assume.
None of that means cutting sugar today can undo your first two years. But adult sugar intake has its own separate body of evidence: a 2023 study in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease found older adults with the highest sugar intake were roughly twice as likely to develop dementia over the following seven years compared to those with the lowest intake. Different study, different age group, same underlying idea: sugar appears to be a modifiable risk factor for brain health at any life stage, not just the first two years.
