Ram 2500 Tire Speed Recall Affects More Than 12,000 Trucks

Owners of certain Ram 2500 trucks are now dealing with a safety recall tied to tire speed ratings and vehicle software calibration. The recall, announced by Stellantis and filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, affects 12,736 trucks from the 2023 through 2026 model years.
The issue centers around the truck’s Powertrain Control Module software. Some affected trucks were built with a speed calibration that allows the vehicle to exceed the maximum speed rating of the installed tires. Tires are designed to operate safely only up to certain speeds, which makes this mismatch a safety concern.

Why This Is a Safety Risk
If a tire is pushed beyond its speed rating, heat builds up inside the structure. Over time, that can weaken the tire and reduce its durability.
In more serious cases, this may lead to:
- Tire failure
- Blowouts at highway speeds
- Loss of control
Safety regulators note that a sudden tire failure at higher speeds can increase the risk of a crash without much warning.
Affected Models
The recall applies to select Ram 2500 trucks from:
- Model years 2023 to 2026
- Built between June 21, 2022, and April 14, 2026
The issue came to light during an internal investigation that began in March 2026. Engineers reviewed the software calibration and found that some vehicles may have been configured to exceed the tire limits installed at the factory.
At this point, the manufacturer has not reported any confirmed crashes, injuries, or claims linked to the defect.
What Fix Is Being Offered
The fix is straightforward and does not require replacing any tires.
Dealers will:
- Update the Powertrain Control Module software
- Adjust the vehicle’s top speed to match tire ratings
This repair will be done at no cost to owners.
When Owners Will Be Notified
The recall rollout is expected to follow this timeline:
- Dealer notifications begin around May 14, 2026
- Owner notification letters start mailing June 4, 2026
Owners will also be able to check their vehicle status using their VIN through the NHTSA recall website once the campaign goes live.
What Owners Should Do Now
If a vehicle may be affected, there are a few practical steps to take:
- Check the VIN on the NHTSA recall website
- Contact a local Ram dealership to schedule the update
- Avoid sustained high-speed driving until the fix is completed
There is no formal “do not drive” warning, but the issue is tied directly to speed limits tied to the tires. Staying within moderate speeds reduces risk until the update is applied.
This recall is gaining traction because it involves an unusual issue. Heavy-duty trucks like the Ram 2500 are not typically linked to speed-related concerns. Still, tire speed ratings apply to all vehicles, including large pickup trucks. When those limits are exceeded, the risks increase, regardless of vehicle size.
