Juneteenth 2026: What's Open & Closed on Friday, June 19

Juneteenth lands on Friday, June 19, 2026, turning it into a long weekend for a lot of people. It marks the end of slavery in the United States and carries real weight beyond the day off. But since it falls on a weekday, here's what's actually running and what's shut.

Government & Public Services
This is the sixth year Juneteenth is a federal holiday, so government offices take the day off. State and local closures can vary, since federal status doesn't automatically bind state governments or private employers.
- Federal offices and federal courts: closed
- Most state and municipal offices: closed (varies by state)
- Public schools: most are already out for summer break
- Social Security field offices: closed, though the online portal and automated phone lines still work
- Public libraries: generally closed, so plan returns for the day before or after
Mail & Package Delivery
This one trips people up every year. The big split is between the postal service and the private carriers.
- USPS: post offices closed, no regular mail delivery, Priority Mail Express still goes out
- UPS: normal pickup and delivery, UPS Store locations open
- FedEx: standard parcel operations running, FedEx Office open
If you're shipping something time-sensitive, UPS and FedEx are your friends on the 19th.
Banks & Financial Markets
Juneteenth is a Federal Reserve holiday, so the banking world largely powers down.
- Closed: Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citi, US Bank, PNC, Truist, Capital One
- Still working: online and mobile banking, ATMs (full withdrawal, deposit, balance)
- Delayed: transfers and direct deposits initiated that day won't clear until Monday, June 22, since the Fed's payment rails are down
- Markets: the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq are both closed, no trading
Stores & Pharmacies
Good news for errand-runners: retail is open. Hours can shift by location, so a quick check before you go is smart.
- Big box and grocery: Walmart, Target, Costco, plus most supermarkets
- Pharmacies: CVS and Walgreens
- Other: liquor stores and most malls operate normally
Restaurants & Coffee
Most chains stay open, though many are franchise-run, so individual hours vary.
- Fast food: McDonald's, Burger King, Taco Bell, Wendy's, Subway, Chipotle
- Coffee: Starbucks and Dunkin', both set hours store by store
- Sit-down: Applebee's, Olive Garden, Chili's, IHOP, Denny's
- Heads up on Chick-fil-A: locations are typically open on Juneteenth, but observing the holiday is left to each individual owner-operator, so call ahead
