Honda Odyssey Recall Raises Concerns Over Faulty Side Airbags

Honda has issued a major safety recall affecting more than 440,000 Honda Odyssey minivans in the United States after discovering a defect in the airbag system.
The issue involves side and side-curtain airbags that may deploy without a crash, raising serious safety concerns for drivers and passengers.
The recall was officially announced in early April 2026 following pressure and investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Which Vehicles Are Affected
The recall applies to:
- Honda Odyssey model years 2018 to 2022
- Vehicles manufactured between January 2017 and June 2022
- A total of 440,830 units in the U.S.
Newer models (2023 and later) are not affected because the issue was corrected in production.
What Is the Problem
The issue stems from a software and calibration problem in the vehicle’s Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). The system is set with incorrect deployment thresholds, which means it can misinterpret normal road conditions, such as bumps or minor impacts, as actual collisions. As a result, the airbags may deploy even when no crash has occurred.
In real-world driving, this means airbags could deploy after:
- Hitting potholes
- Driving over speed bumps
- Contact with road debris
This is dangerous because airbags are designed for collisions. Unexpected deployment can:
- Distract the driver
- Cause minor crashes
- Lead to injuries from the airbag itself
Injuries & Reported Cases
So far, the issue is not just theoretical.
- 130 warranty claims have been reported
- 25 injuries linked to the defect
- No deaths reported
Regulators estimate only about 0.1% of vehicles may experience the defect, but the risk is still considered serious enough to trigger a recall.
What Honda Is Doing
Honda has outlined a clear fix for the affected vehicles by first inspecting the SRS control unit, then reprogramming the system with updated software to correct the issue. If the unit is found to be faulty or does not respond to the update, it will be replaced entirely. All of these repairs will be carried out free of charge. In the meantime, dealers have been instructed to stop selling any affected vehicles until the necessary fixes have been completed.
What Owners Should Do
If you own a 2018–2022 Honda Odyssey:
- Check your VIN on Honda’s recall website
- Wait for an official notification (expected starting May 2026)
- Schedule a repair with an authorized Honda dealer
You can also contact Honda customer service directly for confirmation. Even though the risk is considered low, getting the fix done quickly is the safest move.
This recall highlights how even software-related issues can impact critical safety systems like airbags. While the risk may be limited, the potential consequences make it a serious concern. For affected owners, taking action early and scheduling the repair helps ensure the vehicle remains safe on the road.
