Ford has issued an urgent "Do Not Drive" warning for thousands of vehicles after identifying a suspension-related defect that could lead to a loss of vehicle control. The recall affects select Ford Bronco Sport SUVs and Maverick pickup trucks, with the automaker advising owners not to operate their vehicles until repairs have been completed.

The recall covers approximately 4,653 vehicles, including certain 2021-2026 Ford Bronco Sport models and 2022-2026 Ford Maverick models. According to Ford and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue involves the front lower control arm ball joints, a critical suspension component that helps connect the wheel assembly to the vehicle's suspension system while allowing the wheels to move and steer properly.

What Caused the Recall?

Ford said the affected vehicles may have had front lower control arm ball joints that were incorrectly installed or improperly repaired during assembly. If the component is not secured correctly, the control arm could separate from the front wheel knuckle while the vehicle is in motion.

Such a failure could significantly affect steering and suspension performance. NHTSA warned that a detached control arm may result in a sudden loss of vehicle control, increasing the likelihood of a crash. Because of the seriousness of that risk, Ford took the unusual step of issuing a direct "Do Not Drive" advisory rather than a standard recall notice.

Which Vehicles Are Affected?

The recall applies to a limited number of:

  • 2021-2026 Ford Bronco Sport vehicles
  • 2022-2026 Ford Maverick vehicles

Ford has indicated that the issue appears to be tied to a specific assembly process rather than a widespread design flaw. The affected vehicles represent only a small portion of overall Bronco Sport and Maverick production.

Notably, the recall does not currently affect the larger Ford Bronco SUV. The warning specifically applies to the Bronco Sport crossover and selected Maverick pickup trucks included in Ford's recall population.

What Is Ford Doing to Fix the Problem?

Ford has instructed dealerships to stop selling, demonstrating, or delivering any vehicles included in the recall until inspections are completed. Dealers have been directed to perform visual and physical inspections of the affected suspension components and repair or replace parts as needed. All repairs will be provided free of charge.

Owner notification letters are scheduled to begin mailing on June 5, and Ford has assigned recall reference number 26S36 to the campaign.

What Owners Should Do Now?

Owners who believe their vehicle may be affected should avoid driving it until they confirm its recall status and receive any necessary repairs. Ford recommends contacting a dealership immediately to arrange an inspection.

Drivers can also check their vehicle identification number (VIN) through Ford's recall lookup system or the NHTSA recall database to determine whether their vehicle is included in the campaign.
