A DNA test can reveal information about ancestry, inherited traits, and certain health risks. But what if it claims to tell you whether you are naturally anxious, outgoing, impulsive, or organized?

That question has become more relevant after a massive study published in Nature identified 1,260 genetic variants associated with the Big Five personality traits: extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness. The findings strengthen the evidence that personality has a genetic component, but they do not mean scientists can read someone's personality from their DNA.

But the findings raise another question. If scientists are getting better at identifying genetic influences on personality, how much should consumers trust companies that turn genetic associations into personal DNA reports?

DNA Personality Tests Are Already Here

Consumer DNA testing has moved well beyond ancestry. Some genetic-testing services now sell reports claiming to identify genetic tendencies related to personality, behavior, mood, or character. CariGenetics, for example, sells a personality DNA test that examines 30 genetic traits related to areas such as personality, mood, behavior, and character. SelfDecode offers a personality report covering the Big Five personality traits, feelings, and behaviors.

The science behind these reports is more complicated than a results page might suggest. There is no single gene for being outgoing, organized, curious, or anxious. Personality appears to be influenced by a large number of genetic differences, each contributing a very small effect.

Researchers can combine information from many variants into what are known as polygenic scores or indexes. These scores can identify statistical tendencies across groups of people, but that is very different from accurately describing the personality of one person.

The researchers behind the new Nature study make that limitation particularly clear. Their polygenic indexes predicted some differences in personality across groups, but the researchers explicitly state that these scores cannot predict an individual's future behavior.

In other words, a DNA report may point to genetic tendencies associated with certain personality traits. It cannot tell someone with certainty whether they are an introvert, how they will react under pressure, or what kind of person they will become.

The Accuracy Problem Isn't the Same for Everyone

There is another problem consumers may not see when looking at a DNA personality report. Genetic predictions do not necessarily work equally well across populations.

The new study included participants with European-like and African-like genomes, but the datasets available for the two groups were far from equal. Researchers developed their personality polygenic indexes using data from participants with European-like genomes. When those indexes were applied to participants with African-like genomes, they significantly predicted only three of the five personality traits, and the associations were generally weaker.

This reflects a broader problem in genetic research. People of European ancestry have historically been overrepresented in genomic databases, which can make polygenic scores developed primarily from those datasets less useful when applied to populations with different genetic ancestries.

For consumers, that limitation matters. A personality report can look equally precise for every customer on the screen, even when the research behind its predictions may be more informative for some populations than others.

When a DNA Result Becomes a Label

Accuracy is not the only concern. What people believe about their genetic results may influence how they think about themselves and even how they behave.

In a Stanford experiment published in Nature Human Behaviour, researchers gave participants genetic-risk results related to exercise capacity or satiety, with some receiving results that did not match their actual genotypes. Learning those results affected participants' perceptions, behavior, and some physiological measurements. In some cases, the effects of believing the genetic information were greater than those associated with their actual genetic risk.

The experiment was not about personality, so it does not show that telling someone they are genetically predisposed toward neuroticism will make them more anxious. It does raise an important question for consumer personality tests: What happens when a statistical tendency starts becoming part of how someone understands themselves?

A result labeled as “genetic” may feel more permanent or authoritative than the same observation coming from a personality questionnaire. Someone who’s told that they have a genetic tendency toward anxiety, impulsivity, or introversion could give that label more weight than the underlying science supports.

That makes the way companies explain these results particularly important. A statistical genetic association is not a diagnosis, a prediction of future behavior, or a fixed description of someone's personality.

From Personality Reports to Embryo Selection

The commercialization of behavioral genetics is not limited to consumer DNA reports. Polygenic prediction has also entered reproductive medicine, with some companies offering genetic information about IVF embryos that extends beyond single-gene disorders and chromosomal abnormalities to polygenic predictions.

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine said in 2026 that polygenic embryo testing remains unproven and is not recommended for clinical use. The organization also states that it should not be used for nonmedical trait selection, citing height, intelligence, and eye color as examples.

Public interest in using genetic information this way may already extend beyond disease risk. A recent study published in Nature Human Behaviour examined attitudes toward polygenic embryo testing in the U.S. and China. Among U.S. participants asked whether they would be willing to test embryos for specific characteristics, 61.4% of responses were “yes” when averaged across the two nonmedical traits studied: low IQ and antisocial behavior. Participants were still more willing to test for the medical conditions included in the study.

In a separate part of the experiment, researchers presented participants with hypothetical embryos carrying different predicted chances of medical and nonmedical characteristics. When choosing which embryo they would implant, U.S. participants used information about the two undesirable nonmedical traits at least as strongly as information about the medical conditions.

The new personality study does not make personality-based embryo selection possible. But the progression from identifying behavioral genetic associations to selling predictions based on them shows why the limits of this science matter outside the lab.

DNA Is a Clue, Not an Answer

A DNA personality report may point to genetic tendencies, but it cannot provide a definitive answer about who someone is. Genetic research can identify patterns associated with personality across large groups of people, and scientists can combine many small genetic effects to estimate tendencies toward certain traits. Neither approach provides a genetic blueprint for an individual.

The ancestry gap adds another limitation, while the Stanford experiment suggests that even uncertain genetic information can have consequences once people believe it says something meaningful about them.

DNA personality testing, therefore, sits in an unusual position. The idea that genetics contributes to personality is supported by research. The problem comes when population-level associations are presented as more precise or personally revealing than the science allows.

As genetic prediction improves, companies may have more information they can package and sell. The bigger question for consumers may no longer be whether personality has a genetic basis, but how much meaning anyone should give a prediction simply because it came from their DNA.
