2027 Toyota Highlander Ushers in a New EV Era for the SUV Market

The all-new 2027 Toyota Highlander is more than an updated family SUV. It marks Toyota’s bold entry into the three-row electric segment and a strategic pivot in how the brand approaches electric vehicles in the U.S. market. After years of focusing on hybrid models and cautious electric offerings, Toyota has redesigned the Highlander from the ground up as a full battery electric vehicle (BEV) built for everyday use, long trips, and the realities of family life.

What’s New for 2027?
- Fully electric only
- Three-row midsize BEV focus
- New boxier, more aerodynamic design
- Gas and hybrid reserved for Grand Highlander
Toyota has reimagined the Highlander as a three-row BEV aimed squarely at midsize SUV buyers who want room, tech, and range without a gas engine. Production is set to take place at Toyota’s Kentucky assembly plant, with battery modules assembled in North Carolina — a move that underscores Toyota’s commitment to U.S. manufacturing and supply chain stability.
This new Highlander sheds its gasoline and hybrid roots entirely. Instead, every 2027 model comes with an all-electric powertrain and a fresh design that looks more modern and purposeful than past Highlanders. The boxier exterior lines, broad stance, and flush door handles emphasize aerodynamics and style.
Toyota also simplified its SUV lineup by reserving traditional internal combustion and hybrid power only for the larger Grand Highlander, letting the 2027 Highlander focus fully on battery power.
Batteries & Performance
The 2027 Highlander offers two battery sizes and multiple powertrain layouts:
- 77.0-kWh battery: Standard on XLE models. Estimated range up to about 287 miles (FWD) or 270 miles (AWD)
- 95.8-kWh battery: Standard on Limited and optional on XLE AWD, with an estimated range up to 320 miles
The XLE trim can be equipped with either front-wheel or all-wheel drive. Limited comes standard with AWD and the larger battery pack. The dual-motor AWD setup produces up to 338 horsepower and 323 lb-ft of torque, delivering strong acceleration for a vehicle this size.
Toyota estimates that fast charging from 10% to 80% takes about 30 minutes on compatible DC systems, thanks to an adopted NACS port — the same used by Tesla’s Supercharger network. This increases access to high-speed chargers nationwide.
Dimensions, Interior, & Cargo
- Seats up to seven passengers
- 14-inch central touchscreen display
- 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster
- Multiple USB-C ports and charging points in all rows
- 15.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind third row
- 45.6 cubic feet with third row folded
The 2027 Highlander is sized to compete with other three-row EVs like the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9. Its wheelbase stretches just over 120 inches, while overall length sits around 198.8 inches.
Inside, Toyota focused on tech and comfort. The cabin seats up to seven people with a more usable third row, thanks in part to an extended wheelbase. A large 14-inch touchscreen anchors the dash, supported by a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and plenty of USB-C ports and charging points for all rows. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, along with built-in connectivity that supports navigation and other services.
Cargo space measures about 15.9 cubic feet behind the third row and expands to 45.6 cubic feet with that row folded flat. While slightly less than the outgoing gas Highlander’s max cargo volume, this arrangement still handles strollers, luggage, and gear comfortably.
Toyota also includes vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, letting owners power tools, devices, or even appliances in emergencies or at camp — a feature typically found in more expensive EVs.
What Is the Price of the 2027 Toyota Highlander & When Will It Be Released?
Toyota has confirmed two main trim levels for the 2027 Highlander: XLE and Limited. XLE lets buyers choose front or all-wheel drive, while Limited standardizes AWD with the larger battery and includes more premium features like larger wheels and enhanced interior amenities.
Exact pricing has not been formally announced. Industry estimates place the starting price in the mid-$50,000 range, though final numbers could shift based on incentives, options, and regional markets. Late 2026 to early 2027 is the expected arrival window at dealerships nationwide.
