YouTube TV Steps Away From the NBA Finals

The NBA confirmed there is no presenting sponsor for this year's Finals, closing the book on a partnership that ran since 2018. The news was first shared by Jon Lewis of Sports Media Watch, then verified by the league. After roughly eight years of "NBA Finals presented by YouTube TV," the championship series went without a title sponsor for the San Antonio Spurs-New York Knicks matchup.

A Partnership That Became Hard to Miss

YouTube TV joined as the presenting sponsor in 2018, and over time, its branding became one of the most talked-about parts of the broadcast. They were everywhere. During the 2023 Finals, fans counted as many as nine YouTube TV logos visible on screen at the same time. The Finals logo itself carried "Presented by YouTube TV" underneath it, so the red mark showed up in arena signage, on-screen graphics, and commercial breaks throughout every game.

For a lot of viewers, the constant placement started to feel like too much. The sponsorship brought in real money for the league, but it also chipped away at the polished, big-event feel that the Finals used to have.

Part of a Bigger Cleanup

Dropping the sponsor fits a larger plan to bring back the prestige of the Finals. The NBA and ESPN had been talking through major presentation changes, and several of them are now fully in place. That includes the return of the Larry O'Brien Trophy to center court, refreshed starting-lineup introductions, and a renewed focus on the national anthem. The beloved "Inside the NBA" crew of Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, and Shaquille O'Neal also anchored studio coverage across ESPN and ABC.

Some of these touches started midway through the 2025 Finals, but 2026 is the first time they all came together. The cleaner look, without the wall-to-wall sponsor graphics, has already gone over well with basketball fans who wanted the showcase event to feel special again.

What Happens Next

This does not mean YouTube and the NBA are parting ways. They remain partners, with international games and NBA TV still carried on the YouTube platform. The league does lose out on some sponsorship dollars by going without a presenting sponsor, but the trade-off appears to be a Finals broadcast that puts the basketball front and center.
