Your Claude Conversations Might Show Up in Google Search Results
Anthropic is facing criticism after users discovered that hundreds of conversations shared through Claude could also be found through Google Search. The issue wasn't caused by a hack or data breach. Instead, it stemmed from how Claude's sharing feature works and how many users interpreted it.
When someone clicks "Share" in Claude, the chatbot creates a public webpage containing that conversation. Many users assumed that the page would only be visible to people they personally sent the link to. Instead, because those pages could be indexed by search engines, some eventually appeared in Google search results, making them discoverable by anyone searching the web.
The discovery spread across Reddit over the weekend, where users found that a simple Google search could surface hundreds of shared Claude conversations. Users argue that Claude’s "anyone with the link can view a shared conversation” message doesn't clearly explain that the page itself is public and could later appear in search results.
The publicly accessible conversations covered a wide range of topics. Some included resumes with names and contact information, while others contained draft blog posts, software projects, business plans, legal questions, healthcare research, and everyday conversations. Although many chats were harmless, others demonstrated how easily users can confuse a "share" button with a private collaboration feature.
Anthropic says the feature behaved as intended. According to the company, Claude conversations remain private by default, and users must deliberately choose to generate a public sharing link. The company also said it does not provide search engines with directories of shared conversations. Instead, once a public page exists, search engines may eventually discover and index it like any other webpage.
After the issue gained attention, Anthropic updated its website to prevent search engines from indexing shared conversation pages. The conversations quickly disappeared from Google Search, although anyone who already has a shared link can still access that specific conversation unless the owner disables sharing.
