You Can Now DM Your Friends Directly on Spotify

Spotify has rolled out a new messaging feature, giving users the ability to chat directly inside the app for the first time. The update, launched on August 26, 2025, reflects the company’s push to become more social and keep music, podcast, and audiobook sharing within its platform.
For years, Spotify users have swapped links through text messages and social media. Now, with the new Messages feature, those exchanges can happen without leaving the app. Both free and premium users over the age of 16 in select Latin and South American markets can access it, with expansion to the U.S., Canada, Brazil, the EU, the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand expected in the coming weeks.
Users can share content through the Now Playing screen by tapping the share icon, selecting a friend, and sending a message. At launch, messages are limited to one-on-one conversations, and chats can only be started with people you’ve previously interacted with on Spotify, such as through collaborative playlists, Jams, Blends, or shared plans like Family or Duo.
Spotify stressed that Messages is meant to complement sharing through platforms like Instagram, WhatsApp, or TikTok, not replace it.
For artists and creators, Spotify hopes Messages will encourage more word-of-mouth sharing and help expand their audiences. And for listeners who prefer a simpler experience, the option to disable the feature under Settings > Privacy and Social remains available.
