Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter and CEO of Block, has launched a new messaging app called Bitchat, now available on Apple’s App Store.

Built for offline, peer-to-peer communication, Bitchat uses Bluetooth mesh networking to let users chat without internet, phone numbers, or user accounts. It’s part of Dorsey’s open-source initiative under the collective and Other Stuff.

What does Bitchat do?

Bitchat doesn’t require an account; users are randomly assigned an @handle on first launch. It uses the Noise Protocol Framework for end-to-end encryption and runs entirely over Bluetooth, allowing it to function without internet access. That makes it useful in places like protests, subways, or anywhere with limited connectivity.

The app collects no user data and includes a “Panic Mode” that wipes all messages with a triple tap. Its interface resembles a terminal-style chat but still supports features like private messaging, user blocking, and favoriting contacts. Bitchat is available on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro. A bug affecting Android compatibility is being addressed, with a fix pending approval.

Though Dorsey described it as a “weekend experiment,” the app taps into a growing need for offline, censorship-resistant communication. Similar mesh messaging apps have existed for years, but Dorsey’s name and his push for decentralized tools have brought new attention to the concept.

Since stepping down from Twitter, Dorsey has focused heavily on Bitcoin and open-source efforts via his company, Block. Bitchat reflects his continued interest in decentralized systems, following his earlier projects involving web3 and financial infrastructure.

Bitchat is available on the App Store now. It hasn’t been rolled out globally yet, and the Android version is pending.
