Insects Spotted in Fancy Feast Cat Food: Will There Be a Recall?

Over the past few months, cat owners have raised concerns about Fancy Feast cat food, claiming the popular brand’s quality has dropped. Reports shared on Reddit describe bugs found inside cans, strange discoloration, and even clusters of what some believe to be fly eggs. These accounts have sparked widespread discussion among pet owners and heightened fears of a potential recall.
One Reddit user shared photos of a can of Fancy Feast Gourmet Naturals Ocean Whitefish that appeared to contain a small dead bug, while another thread described rice-shaped clusters resembling insect eggs. Some owners reported that their cats had suddenly stopped eating certain flavors, particularly fish-based pâtés, and a few said their pets developed digestive issues such as diarrhea or vomiting shortly after eating.
Purina, which manufactures Fancy Feast, has not issued a recall at this time, and no current recalls are listed on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s pet food recall database. The company has previously dismissed online safety rumors as “false,” stating that internal testing shows no evidence of a systemic quality problem.
Still, concerns continue to spread online. Some longtime Fancy Feast buyers say they have already switched to other brands such as Wellness, Weruva, and Nulo, while others plan to rotate different foods to reduce risk. Meanwhile, frustrated owners have begun reaching out to retailers and Purina directly with lot numbers, photos, and complaints.
For now, veterinarians advise pet owners to inspect every can carefully before serving and to discard any food that looks unusual or smells off. Suspected issues can be reported to retailers, Purina’s customer service team, or directly to the FDA through its Safety Reporting Portal. If cats show symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, or sudden refusal to eat, owners are encouraged to seek veterinary care immediately.
