Gamers Aren’t Buying Elon Musk’s Pro Player Persona
Updated On: January 13, 2025
Elon Musk might be known for rockets and electric cars, but his recent claims of being a top-tier gamer in Diablo 4 and Path of Exile 2 have gamers calling his skills into question. Sure, his accounts show impressive rankings, but the way he plays doesn’t quite match up with the expertise required to earn them.
A few months ago, Musk boasted about being in the top 20 globally for Diablo 4's Pit 150 runs. While technically true, people were already wondering how someone running multiple companies and tweeting constantly could pull off such an achievement. Fast forward to Path of Exile 2, and it’s a similar story—except this time, the community isn’t buying it.
Musk’s Path of Exile 2 characters are stacked with high-level gear and achievements that usually require hundreds of hours of grinding. Yet when he streamed his gameplay on X (formerly Twitter), it quickly became clear something wasn’t adding up.
Players claim Musk’s gameplay didn’t exactly scream “seasoned pro” as there were some moments where he didn't do the most logical actions for such a pro player. Some moments that really stood out are:
- Musk kept forgetting to use mana flasks, which are needed to cast abilities, and sometimes went over 10 seconds without realizing he was out of mana
- He seemed unaware that atlas nodes must be connected, despite having characters at levels that require running hundreds of maps
- He dragged items into his inventory manually—a tedious and unnecessary method—and didn’t understand why he couldn’t pick up new items with a full inventory
- Musk dismissed HOWA (Hand of Wisdom and Action) gloves as “only” a level 52 item, failing to realize they are one of the most powerful and rare boss-only drops in the game, especially in Hardcore mode
- He doesn't have a loot filter
- He ignores valuable and rare items like Chaos orbs
Many speculate that these signs point to someone else—possibly a hired player—who might be “piloting” his account to grind for gear and levels. There are rumors suggesting the account might even be shared with players in another region, as some trade interactions allegedly defaulted to Chinese text.
It looks like his gaming claims might be more about showing off than actually earning his spot at the top. Many in the community feel that if he showcased his gameplay as a beginner exploring the game, rather than presenting himself as an expert, they would appreciate it much more.
