Borderlands 4 Date Moves Up. Watch the Reveal Today!

Published On: April 30, 2025
Borderlands 4 is officially arriving sooner than expected. Gearbox and 2K Games have confirmed that the game will now launch on September 12, 2025, up from the originally announced September 23. The sudden shift has sparked speculation, with some suggesting it’s a strategic move to avoid competing releases like Bungie’s Marathon, which is slated for the same week.
Fans won’t have to wait long to get a closer look at what’s coming. Gearbox is hosting a Borderlands 4 gameplay deep dive during today’s PlayStation State of Play broadcast, airing live on Wednesday, April 30 at 2 PM PT / 5 PM ET/11 PM CEST
The 20-minute broadcast promises an extended look at:
- Core missions and world-building in the new setting of Kairos
- Revamped Action Skills and explosive weaponry
- Insights from Creative Director Graeme Timmins and Senior Project Producer Anthony Nicholson
- A mix of new and returning characters
This is the first full gameplay showcase since the February launch trailer teased the return of looter-shooter chaos. Today’s stream will mark a shift from teaser to full breakdown, giving players a better idea of what to expect from the fourth entry in the series.
As someone who played Borderlands 3, I’m cautiously optimistic. The gunplay and variety of weapons were a lot of fun, and I liked how each character had distinct skill trees that genuinely changed the way you played them. That said, the writing in Borderlands 3 was a letdown. The story often felt like it was written by a teenager trying too hard to be edgy, and the villain's dialogue was painfully forced. Too much of the humor relied on internet slang and cheap references that aged quickly.
For Borderlands 4, I’m hoping Gearbox dials it back and focuses on characters that feel natural rather than “relatable.” More depth in how abilities work would also help—the existing skill trees are solid but generic. A creative twist or some risk-taking in how you develop your build could really elevate the gameplay.
To watch the deep dive, head to PlayStation’s official Twitch or YouTube channel later today. If those platforms aren’t available in your region, try using a VPN.
