The bottom line is that you can get more servers globally, better VPN features, and 24/7 customer support with Cyberghost for a lower price. So, if you're looking for one of these features it's better that you go read our Cyberghost full review.

What Is SpeedVPN?

SpeedVPN is an Android-based VPN service that allows internet browsing while concealing the user's identity. It's fairly easy to use and install but it also requires a lot of permissions like access to pictures, media, and phone status which is suspicious.

In their privacy policy, they admit that they track the users' IPs which is a red flag because you're using a VPN to stop anyone from tracking your device and your location. So the last thing that you would need is a VPN service that tracks your location.

The application of SpeedVPN allows you to connect for 180 minutes at a time and after this time period has passed the VPN will automatically disconnect. However, you get the option to extend the connection for an extra 60 minutes. This isn't a good sign because you will be limited to a certain amount of time and that is inconvenient when you need to use a VPN for an extended period of time.

When we tested the app, we noticed that it disconnects more than once during the 180 minutes window. It actually disconnects every five minutes or so which is annoying and puts your device and network at risk of security loopholes.

Their speeds are very good on certain servers. However, their frequent disconnection can cross out all the good benefits you could get from this VPN due to its annoyance and inconvenience.

SpeedVPN Features

In this section, we will go over all the features that SpeedVPN has, and even the ones it lacks. We will also explain the importance of each feature so you can judge for yourself whether you want to use this VPN service or not.

Privacy and security

Based country

One of the first things one needs to check in a VPN is where it is located. This is because it's important to know if it is located inside or outside the 5/9/14 Eyes Alliance. Countries inside the eyes alliance spy on their citizens and can have a full log of their activity on the internet. They also have an agreement between each other where they all agree to share this info with each other if needed or if requested.

Some resources say that SpeedVPN is located in Israel and others say that it is located in Hong Kong. While they're not an eyes alliance country, China and Israel are known to closely surveil and track their citizens' data and online traffic. So, they aren't the safest places for a VPN to be located.

Best VPN

Log policy

If a VPN states they have a true no-log policy, it means they do not collect any data or info of their users at all; especially not your email address or billing address. This gives you the assurance that no one is tracking you or your online activity.

As for SpeedVPN, they claim that they do not keep logs, which can be a little comforting considering that it is located in China. However, we noticed that SpeedVPN may keep logs which can be concerning.

Encryption

The top leading VPNs usually use the AES 256-bit encryption, which is the highest level of encryption. Governments, banks, and even military bases use this type of encryption to protect their top-secret data. Some other VPNs provide the AES 128-bit encryption; even though it is not as strong and secure as the AES 256-bit encryption, it is still very secure.

As for SpeedVPN, we are not sure what type of encryption they use to keep your data safe. Nothing is mentioned on their app so we cannot be sure of what type of encryption they use.

Protocols

In the VPN world, so many protocols exist. Differences between protocols make the difference in how secure, fast, and whether the VPN can bypass geo-censorship and geo-restrictions. Typically, the trade-off is between speed and security, as each protocol excels in some aspects while slightly compromising other aspects. The most commonly used protocols include PPTP, L2TP/IPSec, OpenVPN, SSTP, and IKEv2.

Kill switch

A kill switch is one of the most important features you find in good VPNs. A kill switch is vital for your privacy; when you connect to a VPN, you might at times experience a sudden drop in your VPN connection, which can be a threat for you, because then your actual IP address might get exposed. A kill switch will automatically cut your connection to the internet if your VPN connection drops suddenly.

As for SpeedVPN, it does not have a kill switch feature.

Warrant canary

A warrant canary is a VPN's indirect method to warn customers of governmental attempts to subpoena. The presence of the warrant on the company's official website means the local government hasn't yet asked the VPN company to hand in the info of any client. If the warrant canary is removed from the company's page, it means they were asked. The warrant canary is a good feature that can give you assurance.

As for SpeedVPN, it does not have a warrant canary on the website.

Features you can find in a good VPN

We would like to show you the features you need to look for in a VPN to consider it reliable. Some of these features include:

  • AES-256-bit Encryption: This is the strongest type of encryption; governments, banks, military bases, and other official parties use it to protect their confidential info.

  • Zero-logging Policy: A no-log policy denies third-party apps access to your info, as the VPN itself will never save your login info and internet traffic.

  • RAM-based Servers (No data is written on hard drives): This means that the VPN is storing your data on RAM servers that get erased every time the server is rebooted.

  • Kill-Switch: A kill switch is a feature that cuts your internet connection if your VPN connection drops abruptly, preventing your real IP address from getting exposed.

  • Split Tunneling: This feature allows you to choose which apps run on the VPN server and which ones stay on the public network.

  • Unblocking streaming services, such as Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, HBO Go, and so on.

Choosing a good VPN also depends on the quality of the customer support that it provides, the devices the VPN is compatible with, the languages supported by the VPN provider, and the prices.

But we understand how it can be such a pain to go through every single VPN service on the market to look for these features. So, we did the work for you and reviewed a list of the best VPNs.

Recommended VPNs

These VPNs have been tested by us, and all of them scored top points when it came to the features mentioned above.

1. CyberGhost - With their 3-year plan, you will be charged $2.25/month, billed $87.75 every three years.

2. Surfshark - With the 2-year plan, you will be charged $59.76.

2. IPVanish - With the 2-year plan, you will pay $2.62/month ($31.49/year) for the first year and $89.99/year for the renewal price.

3. Private Internet Access - Their best plan is the two-year plan for $69.95 ($2.69/month).

Conclusion

SpeedVPN proved to be fast on some servers. However, this might be the only good feature that it offers. We are not sure that it offers a true no-logs policy and there is no warrant canary on their website. Further, it only works on Android and some users reported that it disconnects every 15 seconds. This could be extremely frustrating and inconvenient.

We recommend that you check our top-rated VPNs to find the right VPN for you. To save you time and effort, Cyberghost is our top-rated VPN in our list.
