OpenAI finalizes the tool that generates videos

Published On: December 10, 2024

On December 9, 2024, OpenAI unveiled Sora Turbo, the latest iteration of the company’s AI-powered text-to-video model, marking a significant milestone in artificial intelligence and content creation. Building on the foundation of the original Sora model introduced earlier this year, Sora Turbo promises faster performance, enhanced features, and broader accessibility for creators.

Sora Turbo allows users to transform textual descriptions into realistic, high-quality videos. The model supports resolutions up to 1080p and offers multiple video formats, including landscape, vertical, and square. Advanced features like frame-by-frame storyboard editing, multimodal inputs combining text, images, and videos, and options for remixing or expanding existing content make Sora a versatile tool for creative professionals.

Subscribers to ChatGPT Plus and Pro plans can access Sora directly through its dedicated platform, Sora.com. Plus subscribers can create up to 50 videos per month at 720p resolution, while Pro subscribers enjoy up to 500 videos per month at 1080p. OpenAI has also announced plans to roll out personalized pricing options by early 2025 to cater to a wider audience. To ensure transparency and prevent misuse, the platform includes integrated safeguards, such as visible watermarks and metadata tagging.

Sora's launch comes after an earlier testing phase faced criticism from participating artists, who claimed OpenAI used their contributions for promotional purposes without adequate compensation. OpenAI has since emphasized its commitment to ethical AI deployment, citing ongoing efforts to balance creativity, transparency, and safety.

While Sora Turbo is available in many regions, some countries, including the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and the European Economic Area, are currently excluded due to regulatory considerations. However, users in these regions can explore the tool by using a VPN to access the platform. OpenAI is actively working to expand availability in compliance with local regulations and aims to provide broader access in the coming months.

With Sora Turbo now live, OpenAI aims to expand its availability to more regions while refining the model’s capabilities. The launch sets the stage for a new era of AI-driven video content creation, empowering users to explore innovative storytelling possibilities.
