For years, GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy have changed the weight-loss game for humans. Now, the same class of drugs is making its way into veterinary medicine, with researchers testing an implant designed to help overweight cats lose weight safely over several months.

The experimental treatment, known as OKV-119, is being developed by California-based OKAVA Pharmaceuticals and is currently being evaluated in the MEOW-1 (ManagEment of OverWeight Cats) clinical trial. Instead of requiring weekly injections like human GLP-1 medications, the treatment is delivered through a tiny implant placed under the cat's skin. Slightly larger than a microchip, the implant slowly releases medication for up to six months.

Veterinary experts estimate that more than 50% of pet cats are overweight or obese, putting them at greater risk of developing diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, kidney problems, and reduced mobility. Extra weight can also make grooming difficult, leading to poor coat condition and skin problems.

Treating obesity in cats has never been simple. Unlike dogs, cats must lose weight gradually because rapid weight loss can trigger hepatic lipidosis, a potentially life-threatening liver condition. Diet changes are also challenging, particularly in households where cats are free-fed throughout the day or where food has become an important part of the owner-pet relationship.

Like Ozempic, OKV-119 is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. The medication mimics natural hormones released after eating, helping regulate blood sugar while reducing appetite and increasing feelings of fullness.

The current MEOW-1 study, led by University of Florida veterinary researcher Dr. Chen Gilor, plans to enroll around 50 obese cats. Researchers will monitor the animals for at least three months, comparing cats receiving the implant with a placebo group before deciding whether longer-term treatment is appropriate.

The study remains in its early stages, but researchers have reported that treated cats are beginning to lose weight while placebo animals have not shown the same trend. Those findings are still preliminary and have not yet established that the treatment is safe or effective for widespread use.

Veterinarians also want to better understand possible side effects. Some experts have questioned whether appetite suppression could become too severe or whether implanted devices might trigger inflammation under the skin, although researchers say the implant material itself is designed to be biologically inert.

If larger studies confirm both safety and effectiveness, OKAVA hopes to seek FDA approval within the next few years, with commercial availability potentially arriving around 2028.

The company has indicated it hopes to price the treatment at around $100 per month or less, making it comparable to premium pet food while potentially reducing long-term costs associated with diabetes treatment.
