Rivian begins delivering tri-motor versions of their R1 Trucks and R1S SUVs

Rivian, the California-based electric vehicle (EV) maker, has started shipping their 2025 R1T truck and R1S SUV models equipped with tri-motor powertrains. This marks a significant enhancement to their existing lineup, following the earlier launch of the dual-motor versions of these vehicles. The tri-motor configuration delivers a notable power boost, with Rivian aiming to capture more of the growing EV market by offering expanded performance options.

The tri-motor system is powered by Rivian’s in-house Enduro motors, featuring one motor on the front axle and two on the rear. Together, they provide an impressive output of 850 horsepower and 1,103 pound-feet of torque, ensuring swift acceleration. Rivian claims the vehicles can go from zero to 60 mph in just 2.9 seconds, making them competitive with some of the fastest EVs on the market. These powertrains are exclusive to Rivian’s second-generation (Gen 2) vehicles, which were initially released with dual-motor options earlier this year.

Range and performance

The new tri-motor versions come paired with Rivian’s Max battery pack, designed to maximize range and performance. This battery configuration allows the R1T truck and R1S SUV to cover up to 405 miles on a single charge when driven in Conserve mode or 371 miles in standard all-purpose driving. Such range capabilities make Rivian’s offerings suitable for long-distance travel and adventure-oriented consumers.

However, those seeking a lower-cost option might opt for the dual-motor variant. It offers up to 410 miles of range and is priced at $16,000 less than the tri-motor configuration. Despite the lower horsepower and torque in the dual-motor version, it still provides ample power, with 533 horsepower and 610 pound-foot of torque.

Pricing and features

The tri-motor 2025 Rivian R1T starts at $99,900, while the R1S SUV costs $105,900. Both models have premium features, including a dynamic glass roof, a high-end audio system, and an onboard air compressor, offering both luxury and functionality. The interior boasts a sleek Black Mountain/Brown Ash Wood design, contributing to the vehicles’ upscale feel.

In comparison, Tesla’s Cybertruck, another popular electric truck, offers a tri-motor “Cyberbeast” model that starts at a higher price point of $119,990. While it delivers comparable performance with 845 horsepower and a 0-60 mph time of 2.6 seconds, the Cybertruck falls short in range, offering just 301 miles on a single charge. Rivian’s more competitive pricing and greater range could give it an edge over Tesla in attracting customers who prioritize both performance and affordability.

Rivian’s future plans

Rivian is focused on diversifying their lineup and solidifying their position in the competitive EV market. The company plans to ship their quad-motor versions of the R1T and R1S early next year. The quad-motor configuration will be Rivian’s most powerful yet, aimed at providing even higher performance levels.

As Rivian works to maintain their momentum, the company is also setting sights on future developments, including the launch of their lower-cost R2 SUV, slated for 2026. Rivian’s long-term strategy involves expanding their product offerings to reach a broader audience, and they are receiving financial support from investors like Volkswagen to aid in this mission.

Rivian’s latest tri-motor powertrains for the R1T and R1S models represent an important step in the company’s ongoing effort to innovate and compete in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market.
