In a landmark announcement on January 28, 2025, French President Emmanuel Macron unveiled an ambitious renovation plan for the Louvre Museum, aiming to modernize the historic institution and enhance the visitor experience. Central to this initiative is the creation of a dedicated room for Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece, the "Mona Lisa," addressing longstanding issues of overcrowding and accessibility.

The "Louvre New Renaissance" Project
Dubbed the "Louvre New Renaissance," the comprehensive project is estimated to cost up to €800 million (approximately $834 million) and is slated for completion by 2031. A significant component of the renovation includes constructing a new entrance near the Seine River, designed to streamline visitor flow and reduce congestion at the museum's current main entrance beneath the iconic glass pyramid.
A New Home for the "Mona Lisa"
The "Mona Lisa" will be relocated to a specially designed room within the museum, accessible through a separate ticketing system. This move aims to provide a more intimate and focused viewing experience for visitors eager to see the renowned painting, while alleviating crowding in the Salle des États, where it is currently displayed alongside other significant works. Presently, the overwhelming demand to view the "Mona Lisa" often results in brief and crowded encounters, with visitors averaging only about 50 seconds in front of the painting.
Addressing Structural and Logistical Challenges
The renovation plan also seeks to tackle various structural and logistical challenges that have emerged over time. Louvre Director Laurence des Cars has highlighted concerns regarding the museum's aging infrastructure, including water leaks, temperature fluctuations, and inadequate visitor amenities such as restrooms and dining options. These issues not only compromise the preservation of artworks but also detract from the overall visitor experience.
Funding the Transformation
To finance this extensive overhaul, the Louvre plans to implement a tiered ticket pricing system, increasing admission fees for non-European Union visitors. Currently, all visitors pay a standard entry fee of €22, but under the new scheme, non-EU tourists may see prices rise to between €25 and €30. Additional funding will be sourced from patronage and revenues generated by the Louvre's Abu Dhabi branch, ensuring that the project proceeds without burdening French taxpayers.
Enhancing the Visitor Experience
Beyond structural improvements, the renovation emphasizes enhancing the visitor experience. The new entrance near the Seine is expected to facilitate smoother access, while the creation of underground rooms will expand exhibition spaces, allowing for more comprehensive displays of the museum's vast collection. By addressing both the physical infrastructure and the logistical flow of visitors, the Louvre aims to maintain its status as the world's most visited museum, which welcomed 8.7 million visitors last year, with over 75% coming from abroad.
A Vision for the Future
President Macron envisions this project as a pivotal moment in the museum's history, comparable to the transformative introduction of the glass pyramid in the 1980s. He stated that the "redesigned, restored, and expanded Louvre will become the epicenter of art history for our country and beyond." By undertaking this ambitious renovation, the Louvre seeks to preserve its rich heritage while adapting to contemporary needs, ensuring that it remains a beacon of culture and art for future generations.
