With the help of Envision Toyota of West Covina, which created a new key free of charge, Sanders turned the ignition—and the truck roared to life as though nothing had happened. Even the headlights and blinkers still worked.

Photos of the melted yet functional Tacoma quickly went viral across social media, with Reddit, Facebook, and Instagram users praising the truck’s rugged design. Many commenters suggested Sanders keep the truck in its battle-scarred state, calling its post-apocalyptic look “badass” and “a testament to Toyota’s legendary reliability.”

This isn’t the first time a Toyota truck has proven its mettle during a wildfire. During the 2018 Camp Fire—one of California’s deadliest wildfires—nurse Allyn Pierce used his Toyota Tundra to transport patients to safety. Despite flames melting the truck’s exterior, Pierce’s Tundra kept running, allowing him to save lives. 

For Sanders, the Tacoma has become more than just a vehicle. With his home gone, the truck is vital for rebuilding his life. “It’s 100% drivable,” Sanders shared. “We’re using it daily to help us recover from the fire’s aftermath.”
