Global superstar Beyoncé is set to headline the halftime show during the Houston Texans' Christmas Day game against the Baltimore Ravens at NRG Stadium in Houston. This highly anticipated game and performance will be streamed live on Netflix, marking a significant milestone as the platform's inaugural live NFL broadcast.
The announcement was made on November 17, with Beyoncé sharing a teaser video on Instagram. In the clip, she stands atop a vintage car adorned with red roses, dressed in a white dress with red and blue prints and a white cowboy hat, catching a football thrown from off-camera. The video is accompanied by an acappella rendition of "AMERIICAN REQUIEM," the opening track from her latest album, "Cowboy Carter."
"Cowboy Carter," released earlier this year, has garnered critical acclaim and earned Beyoncé 11 nominations for the upcoming 2025 Grammy Awards. Notably, the album has secured nominations in several country music categories, including Best Country Solo Performance for "16 CARRIAGES," Best Country Duo/Group Performance alongside Miley Cyrus for "II MOST WANTED," and Best Country Song for "TEXAS HOLD 'EM." These nominations highlight Beyoncé's talent and her successful foray into the country music genre.
This performance marks Beyoncé's return to the NFL stage, having previously headlined the Super Bowl halftime shows in 2013 and 2016. Her upcoming appearance is expected to feature special guests from the "Cowboy Carter" album, which includes collaborations with artists such as Shaboozy, Dolly Parton, Linda Martell, and Willie Nelson.
The Christmas Day game between the Texans and the Ravens is part of Netflix's first venture into live sports broadcasting. The streaming giant has secured a three-year deal with the NFL to stream Christmas Day games, starting with two matchups this year: the Kansas City Chiefs versus the Pittsburgh Steelers, followed by the Ravens against the Texans. This move signifies Netflix's expansion into live event streaming, aiming to tap into the massive viewership that NFL games attract.
Bela Bajaria, Netflix's Chief Content Officer, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, "There are no live annual events, sports or otherwise, that compare with the audiences NFL football attracts. We're so excited that the NFL's Christmas Day games will be only on Netflix."
The NFL's decision to schedule games on Christmas Day has become a tradition in recent years, with the league aiming to provide fans with festive football entertainment. The inclusion of high-profile halftime performances, such as Beyoncé's, adds to the excitement for these holiday matchups, offering viewers a blend of sports and entertainment.
For fans eager to watch the game and Beyoncé's performance, a Netflix subscription will be required. Additionally, in accordance with NFL broadcasting rules, the game will be available on local television in the Houston and Baltimore markets, ensuring that local fans can enjoy the event without a subscription. The game and halftime show are only available to stream in the US.
