Tesla has officially launched the long-awaited "Actually Smart Summon" (ASS) feature, allowing Tesla owners to summon their vehicles using their phones remotely. The feature is available for vehicles equipped with Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology. CEO Elon Musk confirmed via X (formerly Twitter) that the feature will see a wide release next week.

This update marks a significant improvement over previous versions of Smart Summon, which faced delays and functionality issues. This newly released feature allows Tesla vehicles to navigate complex environments like parking lots, making it easier for owners to call their cars from distances of up to 213 feet. The system uses Tesla Vision, relying on cameras instead of ultrasonic sensors, which were removed from the Model 3 and Model Y in 2022.

Early users of the feature have reported its effectiveness, particularly the live camera feed displayed in the Tesla app. This feed allows users to monitor the surroundings of their vehicle in real time as it autonomously drives to their location. While the feature is currently available only to vehicles with hardware 4 (AI4), Musk has stated that a wider rollout will include older models with hardware 3 (HW3) once the initial release is complete. Tesla also plans to introduce additional functionalities, such as longer-range summoning and integration with HomeLink for automated garage door control.

Should you use Tesla’s Actually Smart Summon?

Tesla’s latest “Actually Smart Summon” (ASS) feature is an exciting advancement, but before you start using it, here’s what you should consider.

  • Test in controlled areas: Start by using the feature in a less crowded area, such as an empty parking lot. The system relies on Tesla Vision, which has proven effective but may encounter difficulties in densely packed or poorly lit spaces
  • Keep an eye on safety: Always monitor the live camera feed through the Tesla app while summoning your vehicle, and be ready to stop it if necessary. Tesla recommends being vigilant, especially in environments with pedestrians or other vehicles
  • Use the app’s live feed: One of the most useful additions is the live camera feed in the Tesla app. It shows real-time visuals of your car’s surroundings, helping you ensure the vehicle is navigating safely. Keep the app open as you summon your vehicle to maintain full control
