AI Is Now Guarding Your Front Door From Package Theft

With eCommerce sales booming, so has the risk of lost or stolen packages. In the U.S. alone, over 260 million parcels were stolen in the past year, translating to billions in losses. But now, artificial intelligence is stepping in to fight back.
UPS, for example, just rolled out DeliveryDefense, a machine learning system that scores every address based on past delivery success and theft patterns. Low scores flag risky locations, giving merchants the option to reroute packages to secure pickup points like UPS Stores.
Amazon also started using its Wellspring AI initiative to analyze everything from satellite images to photos of past deliveries. It helps drivers choose safer drop-off spots, such as better-lit entrances or less visible doorsteps. Meanwhile, other companies are turning to physical solutions that complement AI systems:
- FedEx uses photo proof for deliveries and offers tools like Delivery Manager, giving customers more control over timing and location
- Amazon Key lets Prime members receive packages inside their garage for added protection
- Package receiving services like Stowfly offer local pickup locations and PIN-verified handoffs to ensure secure delivery
Not all theft prevention depends on machine learning alone. AI often works best when combined with human behavior data, verified storage locations, and customer interaction tools.
