How to Quote Messages on Discord

How to Quote Messages on DiscordHow to Quote Messages on Discord

Discord is a chat app or a freeware VoIP application that is widely known among gamers and streamers. But this is not the only reason Discord has over 140 million monthly users and a total of +250 million registered users; Discord has become a very well-established application that is now even used by companies for things that are business-related.

Discord was made in 2015, and for four years, quoting a text in the chat was not an option. However, after Discord received a huge number of requests regarding this, they finally added the Discord quote feature, or blockquotes, to their app.

Without further ado, let us learn everything about the Discord quote feature.

How to Quote a Text on Discord

The Discord quote feature is available on all devices; iOS, Android, and desktops. The same methods work for any device. For the sake of making this article clear, we will explain all these methods using the mobile app for reference.

First method: Single-line quoting

This is pretty much self-explanatory; you resort to this method when you want to quote a text that takes up one line only. When the text contains one line only with no line breaks or paragraphs, then this is where you can use the single-line quote method on Discord. Here is how you can quote someone on Discord:

  1. Open Discord and go to the conversation that contains the message you want to quote.
  2. Go to the chatbox and type the ">" symbol, and hit Space one time.
  3. After hitting the Space bar, type in your message.
  4. When you are done, hit enter and send in the message that you have written.

Second method: Multi-line quoting

This is yet another method of quoting on Discord, but for messages that take more than one line, for example, if you want to quote a Discord message that takes up a whole paragraph or a message with line breaks, you will need to resort to this method.

The first sub-method can be used if the message contains several lines with line breaks and can be done as follows:

  1. Open Discord and go to the conversation that contains the message you want to quote.
  2. Go to the chatbox and type the ">" symbol before the first line, and hit Space one time.
  3. After hitting the Space bar, type in your message.
  4. Go to the second line and repeat the same thing. You can do that for as many lines as you need.
  5. After you are done, hit enter and send your messages.

This is a good method if the message contains a small number of lines. However, if the message is long, it will be time-consuming to repeat the process many times.

This is where you move to the next sub-method. Here is how you can do it:

  1. Open Discord and go to the conversation that contains the message you want to quote.
  2. Go to the chatbox and type the ">>>" symbol, and hit Space one time.
  3. After hitting the Space bar, type in the message you want to quote with.
  4. Hit enter and send in the multiple messages that you want to quote the text with on Discord.

It is worth mentioning that on the desktop, the ">" symbol and the ">>>" symbol serve the same purpose.

Third method: Use Code Blocks

Before block codes were introduced, users had to use the methods we mentioned before to quote messages on Discord. Code Blocks are usually used to highlight a certain code within a long message. However, because this feature is very easy to use, people tend to use it for quoting messages on Discord in general.

  1. To create a single line code block, what you need to do is to type a single backtick (`), of course, without the brackets, at the beginning and at the end of the lien. For example, if you want to quote this line on Discord: "How to do a Discord Quote," this is how you need to type it: `How to do a Discord Quote.`
  2. To create a code block for multiple lines, what you need to do is to type a triple backtick (‘’’) at the beginning and the end of the paragraph, again, without the brackets. For example, here is how you cod block the second step of this method:

‘’’To create a code block for multiple lines, what you need to do is to type a triple backtick (‘’’) at the beginning and the end of the paragraph, again, without the brackets. For example, here is how you cod block the second step of this method‘’’

Fourth method: Use Discord Quote Bots

This is the last, but not least, method; you can install the Discord quote bot apps on your device to easily quote messages on Discord; for example, Github has many projects and apps that have been designed to create a Discord quote. Below, we will list down only two of these Github apps that function as Discord quote bots:

  1. Nirewen/ Citador: This great Github project is a great choice for quoting messages on Discord; you can quote a message with a single tap. It also has an easy-to-use user interface. You should choose it if you're looking for an easy, simple tool.
  2. Deivedux/ Quote: This is another great project that is also designed for quoting messages on Discord.

Both projects can be downloaded and installed on your device as apps.

How Do I Reply to a Certain Message on Discord?

To reply to a certain message someone has sent to the chat, you need to tap and hold down the message and tap on "Reply." After you hit enter, the person's username will be tagged along with the message that you have sent.

If someone sends you a lengthy message, you can make use of the methods we have mentioned above to reply to certain parts of their message.
